As a Child Development major, I have been observing children for a few years. It’s one thing to simply take care of a child and a whole different thing to observe his every move. I have witnessed many things that made me change my traditional views on children. If you observe a child, you will discover a lot of things that might surprise you. You can not underestimate a child because of his age, they are actually capable of many things.

Last Saturday, my brother Raleigh, who is almost 4 years old, began crying because of a baseball bat that accidentally hit him. He sat on the grass and would not stop crying. Few feet away, there was pur cousin Nicole. She saw Raleigh and began to walk towards him. She stood in front him, threw her arms to embrace him but lost her balance as she leaned. She got up and moved her head closer to his face, giving him a little head bump. Raleigh kept crying while Nicole just sat in front of him and held him. Raleigh was ignoring her but she stayed with him. She did not know what went wrong but she understood he was upset. She does not know how to say his name yet but she knows him. She’s aware that this crying boy is the same boy who’s always around her. They’re cousins and playmates. Nicole is only a year and a few months old but she was capable of sympathy. And for the record, she was the first to walk towards Raleigh, I just made it first because I have the advantage of walking faster :)

Comfort in little ways

Vans Vans Vans

Vans

Vans Shoes are famous for skate shoes but now they’re also known for reinventing the vintage kicks from the oldies and bringing it back to this new generation. These shoes are no longer made for the sole purpose of playing flips and tricks on the board, they have improved their style to a more fashionable status for everyday wear.

My goal this year is to get at least 3 new pairs of Vans. These styles are already on my list of choices.

Gingham Zapato del Barco

Gingham Zapato del Barco

It’s Vans version of the classic laced loafers. Deck shoes in a Deep red and Antique white checkered Gingham fabric. The Spring and Summer shoes. $65

Check Pattern Gingham Slip-on

If you’re not into the laced shoes, this is the classic low top slip-on version. Same fabric, same pattern. $52

Black, Antique white and Enamel blue pattern with enlarged checks on the side in Gingham fabric. $52

Black Leather-Suede Slip-on

Black Leather-Suede Slip-on

It’s the old school slip-on with a classy look. The combination of leather and suede is the perfect excuse to skip the traditional dress shoes. $52

Crespi Half Cab

Crespi Half Cab

I’m not really a fan of the laced Vans, especially mid and high-tops. But for this Steve Caballero signature style, I’ll make an exception.  It has a pinstripe pattern in Wild Dove color, of course I’ll consider! And there’s something about the red lining that makes this one attractive. $65

I don’t skate but I really like Vans. They are comfortable and they will always find away to match your clothes.

Perseids Shower

The annual Perseids shower is here again. Luckily, in spite of the bright Los Angeles night sky, I was able to see a few Perseids. The first one I saw was really bright and the rest were faint. Maybe if there was no moon and if I lived away from the city, I could have witnessed more Perseids across the sky.

Sometimes I feel like I should have been born in the 70s. I would grow up in the 80s to appreciate the good music from Michael Jackson and all those rock bands during their glory years. I can also be a hippie. Or maybe I would be partying to those disco songs with a big hair. Although I have listened to them during the 90s, it was not very influential to me since it was also the rise of Backstreet Boys, The Moffatts and RnB. 90s Pop left me confused and dragged me to the other direction, okay? It was only recently that I have reconnected with the good old music from the 80s.

Also, growing up in 70s and 80s meant experiencing the first wave of Star Wars and Superman.

But as a Filipino, I think the highlight of growing up in the 70s and 80s is being part of the events that resulted to People Power Revolution of 1986.

This is something that I only learned in school, seen on  television and movies and imagined through books. I wonder how it would be like for me to grow up during these years.

Would life be more meaningful for me? I guess I’ll never know.  My home country has a corrupt president, my host country is full of shit. What’s gonna happen? I belong to a new generation full of wannabes and I-don’t-give-a-fuck attitude. Sometimes, I feel like I’m one of them. It’s scary and it makes me look stupid. I can only wish myself luck and wisdom for the years to come. I hope I become someone worthy of  freedom or at least the subsidized tuition from the State.

PS

Cory Aquino

Cory Aquino

May you rest in peace, President Corazon C. Aquino. I am sure you could have been someone I looked up to.

I was looking at the August issue of Lucky and saw this men’s shoes that they featured.

“We weren’t completely sold on the notion of men’s shoes on women until we spotted these..”

Rachel Comey Nubuck Leather Robson Espadrille Oxfords $310

What I like about this pair is its pastel color. I’d want these shoes for my pastel-colored shirts. And they look lightweight too!

This pair is available at Creatures of Comfort
